The Goodman Redbank Demolition and Excavation project at 43 Weedman Street, Redbank, is a crucial part of the broader expansion and upgrade of the site for its current tenant, Progress Rail.
The project is driven by the need to modernize the facility and improve its functionality for current and future industrial uses, ensuring the site meets contemporary environmental and safety standards.
This project involves the careful demolition of existing structures, excavation, and remediation to prepare the site for new developments. The site, historically used as a locomotive and carriage maintenance facility, requires extensive remediation to address environmental concerns, particularly those related to asbestos contamination and site stability.
Demolition of Structures: The project involved the demolition of multiple buildings and structures down to the top of the slab level. This included careful removal of asbestos-containing materials, followed by the mechanical demolition of reinforced concrete and steel structures. The debris was processed onsite to minimise waste and facilitate recycling.
Excavation and Remediation: Extensive excavation was carried out to removal contaminated soils, including asbestos impacted area. Approximately 20,000m3 of soil was excavated and either treated or disposed of according to environmental guidelines. Remediation also included installing site retention to stabilise the excavation area and prevent environmental contamination.
Groundwater and Stormwater Management: The project required the management of groundwater and stormwater to prevent contamination. This involved installing temporary sumps and pumps, with water being treated onsite before discharge. Sediment and erosion controls measures were implemented to protect nearby water bodies and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
