SCOPE OF WORK

The University of NSW (UNSW) determined that Building D14 had reached its end-of-life phase.

Consequently, DECC were engaged as the Principal Contractors to demolish the building, paving the way for an open space for student and staff enjoyment. This interim solution precedes further development within 5 years, aligning with UNSW's master plan for new facilities on the site.

DECC’s scope included the demolition and hazmat removal of all site improvements and restoring the site through contouring and shaping into a landscaped area with adequate lighting and irrigation. All works were completed during the university semester in a live environment.

KEY ACTIVITIES

Demolition: Complete demolition of Building D14, which consisted of Blocks A, B, and C. Block C was the tallest of the three at 15m high. The structures consisted of brick facades with internal brick walls and steel reinforced concrete floors, columns, and beams on all levels. The structures were demolished from the top down with various sized excavators and skidsteers on the suspended slabs. Once down to a safe height, a larger excavator walked through the remaining structure.

Service Diversions: DECC diverted essential services such as potable water, gas, and lighting to accommodate future site use.

Inground Contamination: Addressing and remediating asbestos-contaminated soil, including the installation of a marker layer and the importation, spreading, and compaction of Virgin Excavated Natural Material (VENM).

Stormwater Management: Installation of a stormwater system and the construction of swales to manage surface water runoff.

Landscaping Works: Comprehensive landscaping, including contouring, shaping, mulching/turfing, installation of outdoor furnishings, and an automatic irrigation system.
