The Landcentre Demolition and Remediation project marked a significant phase in Brisbane’s urban redevelopment, setting the stage for the Queensland Government’s Cross River Rail Project. DECC was appointed as the Principal Contractor to manage the complex demolition and site remediation of the former Landcentre and adjoining dental hospital, both of which were constructed in the 1980s. The project involved extensive hazardous material removal, bulk excavation, and environmental management, ensuring the site was ready for future development.
The project’s scope was extensive and required meticulous planning and execution to address the challenges presented by the site’s location and condition.
Demolition of the Former Landcentre and Dental Hospital: Conducted the meticulous demolition of a nine-storey office building, an adjoining three-storey podium structure with a basement carpark, and a two-storey dental hospital, ensuring safety, structural integrity, and minimal disruption to the surrounding urban environment.
Extensive Hazmat Removal: Carried out comprehensive removal of hazardous materials, including asbestos. The process was managed under strict safety protocols, ensuring compliance with all environmental regulations and safeguarding workers and the local community from potential hazards.
Bulk Excavation and Remediation: Undertook extensive bulk excavation to remove and remediate contaminated fill material, following the guidelines of the Remediation Action Plan (RAP). This included safely managing contaminated soil to prepare the site for redevelopment and ensure it met stringent environmental standards.
Import and Fill: Imported high-quality fill material and executed precise site compaction to achieve final contoured levels. This process also involved stabilising embankments, creating a solid and stable foundation for future construction activities, and ensuring long-term site durability.
Environmental Management: Implemented a comprehensive environmental management strategy, incorporating erosion control, dust suppression, and water runoff management. This approach minimised the environmental impact of demolition and excavation activities, ensuring protection of the surrounding community and compliance with environmental standards.
