Remediation & Hazmat Removal
The Capitol project involved the demolition of a multi-storey building located in the heart of Canberra’s CBD. The building, a conventionally reinforced concrete-framed structure, spanned nine stories and included a three-storey annex. DECC was engaged as the Principal Contractor, tasked with the complex demolition works, which required meticulous planning and execution due to the building's location within a live business precinct. The project also involved the removal of hazardous materials and the disconnection of services, ensuring the site was safely prepared for future redevelopment.
Demolition of Multi-Storey Building: DECC was responsible for the demolition of the nine-storey building, which was a conventionally reinforced concrete-framed structure. The demolition process included the careful dismantling of the building's structural elements, using a combination of conventional demolition techniques and advanced machinery to ensure the safety of the surrounding area.
Demolition of Annex Structure: In addition to the main building, DECC also demolished a three-storey annex structure. This required careful coordination to avoid disruption to the surrounding business precinct and ensure the safe removal of all building materials.
Hazardous Material Removal: The project involved the identification and safe removal of hazardous materials, including asbestos, from the site. DECC coordinated with licensed asbestos removalists to ensure that all hazardous materials were safely removed and disposed of in compliance with environmental and safety regulations.
Working in a Live Business Precinct: Given the building's location within Canberra’s CBD, the project required stringent noise and vibration controls, as well as comprehensive traffic and pedestrian management plans. DECC implemented these measures to minimise disruption to the surrounding businesses and ensure public safety.
