SCOPE OF WORK

Building R9 was purposely built between 1981 and 1986 for the national headquarters of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO). ASIO was established in 1949 and occupied Building R9 for 27 years, with the building being vacant from 2015.

It was later announced that the building had reached its end of life and was no longer a viable option for the Commonwealth to refurbish, with demolition the proposed course of action.

DECC were engaged by the Department of Defence to demolish Building R9 and construct a sealed on-grade 150 car space carpark along with landscaping, lighting, and electric vehicle (EV) charging points.

KEY ACTIVITIES

Demolition: The 16m high concrete and steel structure was demolished from the top down with various sized excavators and skidsteers on the suspended slabs. Once down to a safe height, a larger excavator walked through the remaining structure.

Civil Construction: DECC imported and filled the existing basement with approx. 20,000m3 of material, installed stormwater lines, pits and lighting, constructed kerbs and gutters, and laid asphalt for the on-grade carpark.
