The Ross Street Buildings project involved the demolition of four multi-storey brick and concrete buildings located on the University of Sydney's Camperdown campus. The buildings, which reached up to six storeys in height, were removed to make way for new developments as part of the university’s ongoing campus upgrades. DECC was engaged as the Principal Contractor to manage the demolition, removal of hazardous materials, and the construction of an on-grade carpark and practice cricket facilities. The project required careful planning and coordination due to its location within an active campus environment.
Demolition of Multi-Storey Buildings: DECC was responsible for the demolition of four brick and concrete buildings, each up to six storeys high. The demolition process involved a staged approach, beginning with the soft strip-out of interiors followed by structural demolition using large excavators equipped with hydraulic attachments such as hammers, pulverisers, and shears. The demolition was carefully planned to ensure the safety of the surrounding campus environment.
Hazardous Materials Removal: The project involved the safe removal of hazardous materials, including asbestos, from the buildings before demolition commenced. DECC coordinated with licensed asbestos removalists to ensure all hazardous materials were removed in compliance with environmental and safety regulations, with clearance certificates issued prior to structural demolition.
On-Grade Carpark Construction: Following the demolition, DECC was responsible for the design and construction of an on-grade carpark. The carpark was constructed using recycled materials from the demolished buildings, which were processed onsite to create a suitable sub-base. The carpark included line marking, lighting, and other necessary infrastructure to support the university’s needs.
Practice Cricket Facilities: As part of the project, DECC also constructed practice cricket facilities adjacent to the new carpark. These facilities included the installation of synthetic turf, nets, and fencing, providing a high-quality sports area for university students and staff.
