In 2022, Sydney Airport engaged TTW and ARUP to undertake an end-of-life assessment of Carpark P1 including a detailed structural analysis of the carpark. The assessment found that the structure’s columns and slabs had insufficient vertical (gravity) and lateral (earthquake) load carrying capacity, and the carpark failed an assessment against the 2019 National Construction Code’s robustness requirements.
In February 2023, DECC were appointed to develop a demolition methodology and costing as part of a single source Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) process, in collaboration with the consultants involved in the earlier structural analysis, ultimately leading to DECC being awarded the project.
Demolition: Complete demolition of the four-level P1 carpark, taking the structure down to the top of pile cap level. This includes the systematic removal of all structural components, ensuring the site is left ready for future development.
Hazmat Removal: Identify and safely remove asbestos and other hazardous materials with continuous air monitoring and clearance certification to ensure compliance.
Temporary Propping and Bracing: Installation of temporary propping and bracing to support critical structures during demolition. This included areas like vehicle ramps and the pedestrian tunnel, ensuring that stability is maintained throughout the demolition process.
Traffic and Pedestrian Management: Development and implementation of a comprehensive Traffic and Pedestrian Management Plan to ensure the safe movement of vehicles and pedestrians around the demolition site. This included rerouting pedestrian pathways, controlling truck access to minimise congestion, and coordinating deliveries during curfew hours to avoid disruption to airport operations.
