SCOPE OF WORK

The Norwest Ice Rink, also known as the Sydney Ice Arena, was a prominent ice sports and public ice-skating centre located in Baulkham Hills, NSW. It hosted various major events, including Australian Ice Hockey League games. The site was earmarked for redevelopment to make way for new apartment blocks with retail facilities. DECC was engaged as the Principal Contractor to manage the complete demolition of the 5,000m2 steel-arched framed structure, including the removal of a heavily reinforced suspended concrete slab and the disconnection of live services within the site boundary.

KEY ACTIVITIES

Demolition of Steel-Arched Framed Structure: DECC was responsible for the demolition of the 5,000m2 steel-arched framed structure that formed the main arena. The demolition methodology included the use of conventional techniques combined with induced collapse methods. This approach allowed for the controlled dismantling of the structure while ensuring the safety of the surrounding environment and adherence to strict safety protocols.

Removal of Suspended Concrete Slab: The project required the demolition of a heavily reinforced suspended concrete slab, which formed part of the building’s infrastructure. DECC utilised heavy machinery, including hydraulic breakers and pulverisers, to effectively break down and remove the concrete slab, ensuring that all debris was safely processed and removed from the site.

Environmental and Noise Management: Given the site’s urban location, DECC implemented rigorous environmental and noise management protocols. A qualified consultant was engaged to monitor noise levels throughout the project, ensuring compliance with local council requirements and minimising disruption to neighbouring properties.
