Remediation & Hazmat Removal
The Herston Hospital Redevelopment project involved the demolition of several large concrete structures at the former Royal Brisbane Children’s Hospital site as part of the broader Herston Quarter redevelopment. DECC was engaged as a Subcontractor, responsible for the removal of hazardous materials, the demolition of multiple heavy-duty concrete buildings, and the remediation of localised contamination hotspots. The project was part of a larger initiative to transform the area into a mixed-use community that includes a new hospital, aged care, and residential facilities, while preserving the site's historical significance.
Hazardous Materials Removal: DECC was tasked with the removal of hazardous materials, including friable asbestos and lead dust, from the existing buildings. This work was carried out with strict adherence to environmental and safety regulations, ensuring that the site was safe for subsequent demolition activities.
Demolition of Concrete Buildings: The project involved the demolition of four heavy-duty concrete buildings, including the Woolworths, Coles, Surgical, and Foundation buildings. Each of these structures was six storeys high, requiring careful planning and the use of specialised equipment to safely dismantle the buildings while minimising disruption to the surrounding hospital environment.
Site Contouring and Remediation: Following the demolition, DECC undertook site contouring and shaping to prepare the area for future development. This included the remediation of localised contamination hotspots, ensuring that the site met all environmental standards and was suitable for its intended future use.
Environmental and Stakeholder Management: Given the project's location within a sensitive hospital environment, DECC implemented robust environmental management practices. These included erosion and sedimentation controls, dust suppression, and noise management strategies. Additionally, DECC worked closely with stakeholders, including the hospital and surrounding community, to minimise the impact of demolition activities on ongoing hospital operations.
