SCOPE OF WORK

The 421 Flushcombe Road project in Blacktown, Sydney, involved the demolition of a large industrial warehouse, encompassing the removal of hazardous materials and the demolition of extensive slabs and pavements. DECC was engaged as the Principal Contractor to deliver the early works package, setting the stage for future developments at the site. This project required careful coordination and execution to ensure that all hazardous materials were safely removed, and that the demolition was carried out with minimal disruption to the surrounding area.

KEY ACTIVITIES

Service Disconnections: DECC coordinated the disconnection, capping, and removal of redundant services, including power, water, gas, and sewer. This process was critical to ensure the safe commencement of demolition activities and to prevent any unintended service disruptions.

Hazardous Materials Removal: The project involved the meticulous removal of hazardous materials, including asbestos, synthetic mineral fibres (SMF), and other contaminants. All hazardous materials were removed in accordance with strict safety and environmental protocols, with clearance certificates issued prior to the commencement of structural demolition.

Demolition of Portal Framed Steel Structures: DECC undertook the demolition of approximately 10,000m2 of portal-framed steel structures, including cladding and precast panels. The demolition was conducted using heavy machinery, including 38 to 70-tonne excavators equipped with hydraulic hammers, pulverisers, and shears, ensuring the efficient dismantling of the structures.

Slab and Pavement Demolition: The project also required the demolition of approximately 24,300m2 of concrete slabs and pavements. This phase involved the use of specialised equipment to break up the concrete, which was then processed and removed from the site for recycling.

Environmental Management: Given the proximity of the site to other industrial properties and the presence of high-voltage overhead powerlines, DECC implemented robust environmental management measures. These included erosion and sediment control, dust suppression, and the careful handling and disposal of waste materials to minimize environmental impact.
