The Concord Oval Precinct has undergone development for the purpose of constructing and maintaining a centre for sporting excellence (Wests Tigers) focusing on first class matches and training for field sports as well as high quality recreational, community and cultural Precinct accessible to the local community.
The Eastern Grandstand, standing at 18 metres tall with a footprint of approximately 3,900 square metres, and the Western Grandstand, with a footprint of 2,800 square metres, were both reinforced concrete structures with metal roofs supported by cantilevered steel beams. The demolition work was essential to clear the site for new development while preserving heritage elements such as the entrance gates.
The scope of work included disconnection of services, hazardous material removal, structural demolition, and site preparation, ensuring environmental protection and site safety.
Service Disconnection: All utility services, including water, power, and gas, were disconnected and made safe by licensed trades before demolition. This ensured that no live services posed a risk during demolition activities, and certifications were obtained to confirm safe disconnection. DECC also managed the decommissioning of the Ausgrid substation located onsite.
Demolition: The demolition involved the systematic deconstruction of the Eastern and Western Grandstands. Using large excavators with hydraulic attachments, the structures were reduced to a concrete shell before being demolished bay by bay. The metal roofs were removed, and the reinforced concrete elements were systematically broken down and processed for disposal.
Hazardous Materials Removal: Air monitoring was implemented throughout the removal process, and clearance certificates were obtained from a certified hygienist before proceeding with structural demolition. This ensured a safe environment for all workers onsite.
