The Cambridge Hotel project in Surry Hills, Sydney, involved the comprehensive demolition of a 4-storey brick and concrete building and the excavation of a 5-level basement. DECC was engaged as the Principal Contractor, responsible for overseeing the entire process, including the safe removal of hazardous materials, implementation of site retention systems, and meticulous management of a highly sensitive urban environment.
Given the site's location in a densely populated area, the project required strict adherence to the City of Sydney’s Construction Traffic Management Plan (CTMP) and effective noise and vibration controls to minimise disruption to the surrounding community.
The project was successfully completed in July 2020, meeting all project objectives within the specified budget and timeframe. DECC's effective management of the demolition, hazardous material removal, and excavation works ensured the safety of the site and surrounding community, paving the way for future development on the site.
Demolition of 4-Storey Structure: The demolition involved the controlled dismantling of the existing 4-storey structure, composed of brick and concrete, with a total footprint of approximately 405m2.
Excavation of 5-Level Basement: Following the demolition, DECC conducted the excavation of a 5-level basement, removing approximately 10,000m3 of material. Excavated spoil was handled using a 32-tonne excavator fitted with a telescopic clamshell bucket, operating from a specially constructed loading platform designed to optimise space and safety in the constrained site.
Perimeter Site Retention: The project included the installation of a comprehensive site retention system to support the excavation and protect adjacent structures. This system consisted of shoring piles, a capping beam, and ground anchors, which were essential for maintaining the stability of the excavation perimeter throughout the project.
