The Canberra Centre redevelopment project focuses on modernising and reconfiguring retail spaces within one of Canberra’s premier shopping destinations. The project involved the comprehensive strip-out and demolition of existing structures within the Target Remix area and other key retail outlets such as Revel Sport, EB Games, and JB Hi-Fi.
This redevelopment is crucial to enhancing the shopping experience and meeting current consumer demands. The project required meticulous planning and execution to ensure minimal disruption to the ongoing operations within the high-traffic shopping centre, with a strong emphasis on safety and efficiency throughout the demolition process.
Structural Demolition of Retail Spaces: Demolition included the removal of mezzanine level, block walls, and concrete kerbs within retail outlets and the shopping centre carpark. Medium sized excavators with hydraulic attachments were used to carefully dismantle these structures while maintaining the integrity of the surrounding areas.
Hazardous Materials Management: A thorough hazardous materials survey identified asbestos and other hazardous substances within the demolition zones. These materials were removed safely ensuring compliance with all health and safety regulations, with clearance certificates obtained before continuing on with structural demolition.
Site Preparation and Strip Out: The project also involved the strip out of non-structural elements, including ceiling, fixtures, and floor finishes, reducing the buildings to a shell. This works prepared the spaces for future construction phases, with all debris processed and removed from the site according to strict environmental controls.
